Q.No.4143: As DX Nikkor lenses are designed specifically for use with digital cameras, how do they differ from film-camera lenses?
Can DX Nikkor lenses be mounted on film cameras, or can they not be used at all?
Ans : - The size of the image circle has been optimized to guarantee image quality with digital SLR cameras.
- As DX Nikkor lenses use the same F mount as film cameras, they can, theoretically, be mounted and used just as G-type film-camera lenses.
However, the smaller image circle of DX Nikkor lenses prevents light from entering surface peripheries.
Even when light does enter, optical performance cannot be assured.
Therefore, we have declared that DX Nikkor lenses cannot be used with film cameras.
- DX Nikkor lenses have been evaluated by MTF under stricter conditions than previous 35mm film-camera lenses, and designed for more uniformity in contrast from the center of the image to its edges.
* MTF is an acronym for Modulation Transfer Function expressing the parameters of space frequency, and is the method used to indicate the actual level of contrast reproductin possible in the subject of an image.
