Q.No.3280: What Scene Modes are available?
What are the settings for each scene?
Ans : Scene Modes are special modes that offer automatic adjustment to the most appropriate settings, based on prevailing shooting conditions.
Set the Mode Dial to one of four Scene Modes with Scene Assistance, or set it to SCENE and select one of 10 Scene Modes from the menu on the LCD Monitor.
Then all you have to do is shoot.
The 14 available Scene Modes:

- Portrait
Captures a soft portrait of a subject standing out against a beautifully defocused background.
(Degree of defocusing depends on brightness.)
With Scene Assistance function, users can shoot a subject with off-center composition while maintaining sharp focus and correct exposure.
- Landscape
Color balance is optimized for green leaves or blue sky.
Take distant scenes with excellent color contrast and clarity.
There are four Scene Assist functions.
With the "Scenic view" and "Architecture" assist functions, color contrast is emphasized for images with rich colors.
With the "Group right" and "Group left" assist functions, both foreground subject and landscape will be in focus.
Shutter response is better than normal in continuous shooting mode.
- Sports
Captures movement of a subject in action thanks to fast shutter speeds.
This mode is recommended for shooting sports activities or fast-moving subjects, to freeze their dynamic movements.
There are three Scene Assist functions.
The "Sports" assist function enables continuous shooting at up to 1.5 frames per second.
With the "Sport spectator" assist function, the shutter release button can be pressed in one motion without pausing halfway to confirm focusing.
And the "Sport composite" assist function takes 16 shots in about two seconds then arranges them in four rows to form a single picture.
- Night portrait
Captures a night scene with a subject under natural exposure against an illuminated background.
(Note: Be aware of camera shake when shooing in this mode.)
Scene Assist functions are common with the Portrait Mode.

- Party/Indoor
Takes an atmospheric indoor party photos in which both the main subject and background have a balanced exposure.
(Note: Be aware of camera shake when shooing in this mode.)
- Beach/Snow
Captures a sea, lake, beach or snow scene clearly and brightly.
- Sunset
Captures sunsets in all their splendor.
- Dusk/Dawn
Preserves the colors seen in the weak natural light before sunrise or after sunset.
Flash is canceled.
- Night landscape
Capture stunning nighttime scenes using a slow shutter speed, without using a Speedlight.
(Set the camera on a steady surface or use a tripod.)
- Close up
This mode makes tiny subjects such as flowers and insects stand out from the background in stunning color.
Continuous aufotocus operation is selected.
- Museum
Use for taking pictures in indoor locations such as museums where use of a flash is prohibited.
(Note: In some museums and exhibitions, it is prohibited to take pictures, even without flash. Be sure to obtain permission before taking any pictures.)
- Fireworks show
Finally, a way to capture the true colors and excitement of a fireworks display.
Be sure to use a tripod to prevent camera shake.
- Copy
This mode is convenient when shooting text or drawings on white material such as paper or whiteboard.
- Back light
The Speedlight fires to brighten a backlit subject that would otherwise come out dark if no flash was used.

In Scene Modes, the Noise Reduction is automatically activated when the shutter speed is slower than 1/4 sec.
When this function is on, the time required to save a picture to the CF card roughly doubled.
