| Q.No.3205: | What are PTP and mass storage? Is the camera compatible? |
| Ans : | PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) is a new image-transfer protocol for Windows XP (Home Edition, Professional) and Mac OS X.
With the Mass Storage protocol, the camera could only be handled as a card reader. This meant that control of the camera from the computer was not possible. In addition to the Mass Storage USB transfer method available, the cameras listed in the applicable models also support the additional option of PTP transfer. The PTP protocol is thought to eventually become the standard for camera connection to a computer, and includes camera control functions (shutter release, camera settings). (Camera control from a computer is currently not supported.) The proper name for Mass Storage is USB Mass Storage Class. When USB Mass Storage devices are connected to a computer, they are recognized as peripheral drives such as floppy drives or hard disk drives. As the computer OS recognizes the connected camera as a disk drive, it is possible to transfer images from cameras supporting Mass Storage transfer using not only the software bundled with the camera, but also using standard OS copy operations such as Windows Explorer. Under Mac OS X, image transfer using the camera's transfer button is only possible with the PTP transfer method (requires Mac OS X version 10.1.3 or later). Under Windows XP, both Mass Storage and PTP transfer are supported. Under Windows Me, 98 SE or Mac OS 9, only the Mass Storage transfer method is supported. |
