Q.No.1595: What settings should be used when using accessories for external Speedlights, such as brackets, cords and adapters?
Ans 1. Turn the Speedlight on.
Do not set the Speedlight to STBY (standby). If the Speedlight turns off automatically while you are taking photographs with the Speedlight set to STBY, it will not turn on again when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway.

2. Set the Speedlight to an angle wider than 28 mm.
If the Speedlight has a zoom function, set the flash angle by choosing a zoom setting of less than 28 mm. With other Speedlights, use a wide panel to increase the illuminating angle.

3. Set the flash mode to TTL.
When the flash mode is set to TTL, the photocell in your COOLPIX camera (COOLPIX 990, 950, 910/900s) measures illumination and automatically adjusts the amount of light produced by the Speedlight.

4. Photographs can be taken when the Speedlight`s flash-ready light comes on, provided that the camera's built-in flash is fully charged.
When a COOLPIX 950 or 990 is used, the internal flash can be turned off and only the external Speedlight used.

¥ Because the built-in flash and any external Speedlights will have independent power sources, charging times for the internal flash and external Speedlights will differ.
¥ We recommend using nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries in the camera to reduce the time needed to charge the built-in flash.
¥ Refer to the relevant manuals for detailed information about COOLPIX (910/900s,950,990) cameras and Nikon Speedlights.
¥ If the Speedlight has fired at maximum strength, the flash-ready light will blink for approximately two to three seconds as a warning. Check the photograph in the monitor. If it appears underexposed, reduce the distance to the subject and try again.
