Q.No.1360: The flash is set to "Auto with red-eye reduction" whenever I turn the camera on.
Ans : In A-REC (or in the case of the COOLPIX 880, AUTO) mode, the flash setting is automatically restored to either "Auto" or "Auto with red-eye reduction" when the camera is turned on.
The setting restored is whichever of "Auto" or "Auto with red-eye reduction" was last used to take a photograph, even if the last setting used before the camera was turned off was "Flash Cancel" (off) or "Anytime Flash" (fill flash).
To prevent the flash automatically being reset to "Auto with red-eye reduction" when the camera is turned on, you will need to take a photograph with the flash set to "Auto" before turning the camera off.

In M-REC mode (or in the case of the COOLPIX 880, in P, A, M, and CSM modes), the camera can be programmed to store the flash setting in effect when the power was turned off, restoring this setting when next the camera is turned on in the same operating mode:

COOLPIX 950, 800, 700
¥ Turn the mode dial to M-REC, press the MENU button, select SET UP > CONTROLS, and check "FLASH SETTING SAVE"
COOLPIX 990
¥ Turn the mode dial to M-REC, press the MENU button, select SET-UP > Controls > Memorize, and check the flash setting item
COOLPIX 880
¥ Turn the mode dial to SETUP, select Controls, and check "Flash setting save" (this is the default setting)

If none of the items in the "Control" menu are checked, camera settings when the camera is turned on in M-REC (P, A, M, or CSM) mode will be the same as when the camera is turned on in A-REC (AUTO) mode.
Consequently, if you use the "Control" menu to store only the flash setting, you will be able to use M-REC (P, A, M, or CSM) mode for the same kind of full-auto photography you can enjoy in A-REC (AUTO) mode.

¥ In the case of the COOLPIX 880, a flash setting appropriate to the selected scene will automatically be selected when the camera is turned on in SCENE mode or when the mode dial is turned to SCENE from another setting.
