| Perspective, a subject that often confuses photographers and is difficult to describe with words, is best understood by simply looking through the viewfinder of a Nikon SLR camera. Choose a wideangle lens, and you will notice the wide field of view and the relative separation of subject from background. Move closer and you'll see how the main subject becomes more dominant in the composition, but lines now seem to converge as they move into the distance. Still another kind of effect is apparent when you look through a telephoto lens. The longer the focal length, the more the focused subject and the background seem to come together as the field becomes compressed. This effect also seems to change as you use different apertures. Understanding perspective will enable you to choose the lens with the right focal length to achieve the effect you desire. Pictures are taken at different shooting distances, but the subject is about the same size in each frame. |
